Election of the new head of the European Parliament after the death of David Sassoli will be held on January 18

The election of the new head of the European Parliament, who will replace the earlier deceased David Sassoli, will be held on January 18. This is stated on the EP website.
According to the current charter of the European Parliament, the functions of the chairman will be temporarily performed by the first deputy head of the institute – until the election of a new head. The elections will take place during a plenary session in Strasbourg.
Sassoli himself was not going to participate in them due to health problems. Prior to that, in September 2021, he was hospitalized with pneumonia in Strasbourg (it was not caused by COVID-19). Sassoli died on Monday, January 11, due to serious problems with the immune system – before that he had been in the hospital for several weeks.
He was elected to his post in July 2019.
