Copenhagen – The football star Christian Eriksen, who collapsed in the European Championship preliminary round match between Denmark and Finland, is conscious. The 29-year-old is “awake and is for further examinations in the imperial hospital”, wrote the Danish association DBU on Twitter and announced new information promptly.
Collapsed on the lawn
Applause broke out in the Parken Stadium when the news broke. The game has been paused due to the medical emergency and will resume at 8:30 p.m.
Eriksen collapsed in the 43rd minute of the game in Copenhagen without any interference on the lawn and remained motionless. Rescuers who were called immediately had taken life-saving measures.
In the stadium, paramedics could be seen performing a heart muscle massage. It was only minutes later that Eriksen was driven out of the interior of the Parken Stadium on a rescue stretcher, under privacy protection and accompanied by his teammates. The Denmark professionals were close to tears, and Eriksen's girlfriend had rushed onto the lawn.
Collective shock
The spectators, coaches and players were in shock – many clapped their hands over their faces. It was quiet in the stadium at times after it had been very atmospheric at the first appearance of the Danish team in Copenhagen. “Please stay in your seats until there is more information,” said the announcer through.
The game was initially only interrupted, both teams left the lawn. A crisis meeting with both teams and the game management took place. At around 8 p.m., the Danish Football Association announced that the game would resume at 8:30 p.m.
