“A suicide bomber detonates an explosive device at the Church of St. Elijah in the Dwelaa area of Damascus,” Syrian state television reported.
According to the SANA news agency, the explosive device was attached to the suicide bomber's belt.
The AFP news agency reports that the interior of the church has suffered serious damage: wooden benches are damaged, torn icons are lying on the floor, and there are traces of blood all around.
Following the explosion, security forces sealed off the area where the attack took place and began evacuating the dead and injured. The official death toll is being clarified. Security officials have not yet provided any comments.
