Czech Industry Minister Lukas Vlcek announced his readiness to provide additional capacities for gas transit and storage both in this heating season and on a long-term basis.

The Czech Republic expressed its readiness to support Slovakia in ensuring stable gas supplies if Ukraine stops transiting Russian gas at the end of years.

Reuters reports this.

Czech Industry Minister Lukas Vlcek, in his letter to his Slovak counterpart, stated his readiness to provide additional capacity for transit and storage of gas both for this heating season and on a long-term basis.

Slovakia, which has a contract with Russia's Gazprom, is seeking to maintain gas supplies through Ukraine, despite Kiev's refusal to extend the transit agreement due to the war with Russia.

Vlcek also noted that alternative gas supplies will become more accessible after Germany's decision to cancel the gas tax for transit countries from January 1.

The Czech Republic, which no longer buys gas directly from Russia, recently increasingly relying on cheaper gas via Slovakia, potentially of Russian origin.

Recall that on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at 7 am, Ukraine will stop transiting Russian gas. The corresponding 5-year contract concluded in December 2019 expires.
