Cyber attack on Ukrainian media: hackers hacked UP, Apostrophe and Liga

by alex

On Sunday, February 18, unknown hackers attacked several Ukrainian media outlets. Ukrainian Pravda, Apostrophe and Liga.net were reported about the hacking of websites and accounts on social networks.

As reported on the UP website, the editors lost access to their account on the social network X (Twitter), and fakes began to appear on the page.

— In particular, fake information was posted there about the alleged defeat of elite units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Avdeevka by Russian occupiers. We are trying to restore access. Please do not consider the information published on the social network to be related to the UP, — the message says.

The Apostrophe publication reported that it was attacked by Russian IPSO officers.

– The website published material that elite units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were defeated in Avdiivka, and Ukrainian defenders are allegedly fleeing from positions, abandoning equipment and the wounded. The disinformation was supported by a collage and a caption, the message says.

The editors of Apostrophe declare: this material has nothing to do with reality and encourages readers to consume information responsibly. The site team is doing everything possible to prevent similar attacks by Russian aggressors in the future.

The Internet publication Liga.net also reports about the cyber attack. Journalists recorded unauthorized access to their website and the appearance of fakes on the page.

— On February 18 at 14:30, fake news appeared on the LIGA.net website about the alleged “destruction” Russian occupiers of the elite units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Avdeevka. The editors of LIGA.net are not involved in the publication of Russian disinformation; the site was hacked by unknown persons. The fake news was quickly removed from the news feed, but it was still active for some time, and was also automatically distributed in the LIGA.net account on the social network X (formerly Twitter), — the journalist reports.

Liga.net apologized to its readers and stated that it was investigating the existing security gaps in order to correct the situation and prevent it from happening again.
