A Chinese citizen was charged with the crime. According to police, he stole about 23 thousand dollars during a flight from Vietnam to Singapore.
CNN reports this.
According to the source, the man committed the crime on December 16 on board the budget airline Scoot, part of Singapore Airlines.
52-year-old Zhang Xiuqiang, a Chinese citizen, was on board a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore.
According to the indictment, 52-year-old Zhang Xiuqiang allegedly robbed three passengers.
He stole three million Vietnamese dong ($123) from one person’s backpack. And from another neighbor's bag he stole 510 million Vietnamese dong (20,950 US dollars) and 50 Singapore dollars (38 US dollars).
From the envelope in the third passenger’s bag he pulled out another thousand US dollars and 930 Singapore dollars (700 US dollars).
“One of the passengers warned the crew about a possible theft that had occurred in the cabin of the plane. The crew called the airport police. Law enforcement officers separately removed the passengers who would be under investigation from the plane, and the rest of the people disembarked as usual,” — said a representative of the airline.
The suspect is in custody for further investigation. If convicted of theft, he could face up to three years in prison, a fine, or both.
This is not the first such case. In October 2023, Hong Kong police busted a crime syndicate that was stealing passengers' credit cards.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine, in Kropyvnytskyi, a man stole medicine from a pharmacy for 146 hryvnia. For this he received seven years in prison.
