A group of scientists from the United States has developed a chewing gum to limit the spread of coronavirus. This was reported on the University of Pennsylvania website.
One of the creators of a new remedy for COVID-19 explained that the virus multiplies in saliva, and their chewing gum is able to neutralize the virus. According to him, the particles of the virus come out when someone from the infected sneezes, coughs or even just talks. “Chewing gum will neutralize the virus in the saliva, and it’s an easy way for us to prevent this from spreading,” said team leader Henry Daniell.
The drug is based on the ACE2 protein, injections of which reduce viral load with severe infections. Scientists have grown the protein in the laboratory and combined it with other substances, on the basis of which they have created chewing gum that blocks the ACE2 receptor. This interferes with the binding of the coronavirus spike protein.
In June 2021, it was reported that the Central Research Institute (TsNII) of the Ministry of Defense began developing a drug against coronavirus in the form of chewing gum. The work is carried out by the 48th Central Research Institute of the Ministry of Defense, which previously, together with the Gamaleya Center, participated in the creation of the Sputnik V vaccine. A source in the department clarified that the mucosal vaccine against COVID-19 is being developed in the form of chewable tablets and pastilles.
