German experts predict “a significant increase in cases of infection with the Omicron variant.”

In Germany, as of Thursday, January 13, the new Omicron strain of COVID-19 accounts for 73.3% of all coronavirus cases.

This is with reference to the report of the Robert Koch Institute and Reuters reports The Guardian.

It is noted that Omicron has become the dominant option for the entire territory of Germany over the past seven days. Previously, it accounted for 44.3% of cases of coronavirus infection.

At the same time, the Delta COVID strain, which for a long time was considered the most common in the country, is now recorded in only 25.9% of infections.

“In the coming weeks, we expect a significant increase in cases of infection with the Omicron variant,” the report said. “First studies indicate a lower proportion of hospitalizations among those who are fully vaccinated when compared with infections caused by the Delta variant.

About 72% of the German population has already received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, and 44% received a booster shot.

As reported, 81,417 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Germany over the past day, which is the second consecutive highest increase in infections in the country since the start of the pandemic.
