Covid patients diagnosed with a dangerous syndrome

A group of international scientists called Guillain-Barré syndrome a possible consequence of the coronavirus.

The article, published in the medical journal Brain, says that since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of patients with neurological diseases, including those with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), has increased.

Scientists cannot yet say unequivocally whether the occurrence of GBS is a consequence of the postponed coronavirus, however, 22% of 49 people who were diagnosed with the syndrome from January 30 to May 30, 2020 had previously had COVID-19.

Patients with confirmed or probable SARS-CoV-2 infection had a sensorimotor variant in 73% of cases and facial nerve palsy in 64% of cases. The median time from coronavirus disease to neurological symptoms was 16 days.

Patients with COVID-19 had common neurological features similar to those previously described in other patients with post-viral Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Scientists note that the number of recorded cases of the syndrome has not increased since the beginning of the pandemic, so a close relationship between coronavirus and GBS is unlikely.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare condition in which a person's immune system attacks their own peripheral nerves. GBS can involve nerves that control muscle movement or transmit pain, temperature, and tactile sensations. This can lead to muscle weakness and loss of sensation in the legs and / or arms. In severe cases, complete paralysis can occur.
