The Helsinki Court of Appeal has ordered the confiscation of a skirt from a 25-year-old Roma woman, finding it to be a weapon used in a crime.

In November 2023, the woman and her accomplice attempted to steal goods from a supermarket in the Vuosaari district of Helsinki by hiding them under a velvet skirt. The stolen items included three candy boxes, five Moomin bowls, tableware and two robotic vacuum cleaners. The total value of the goods was around 800 euros.
Since the women left the stolen goods in another section of the store and left without them, their actions were classified as attempted theft.
The district court ordered the confiscation of both women's skirts, noting that they were specially designed to conceal items – the inner and outer layers were sewn together to create a hidden cavity between them.
One of the women filed an appeal, demanding that the skirt be returned to her, citing that it is part of the national Roma dress and has great cultural and personal significance. The complaint also noted that the loss of such a skirt is considered shameful not only for the woman herself, but also for her family.
However, the appeal court upheld the decision. The decision stated that the woman had committed thefts on multiple occasions (2021–2024), and had used the same scheme with the skirt on many occasions. The court noted that the confiscation of the skirt was intended to prevent similar crimes in the future, although it acknowledged that the skirt itself was not made exclusively for the purpose of theft.
