The number of victims of terrorism in the world has decreased by 59 percent since 2014, but the situation in Western countries is crisis. Politico writes about this with reference to the data of the Global Terrorism Index (GTI).
It is noted that the West is experiencing the highest death rate associated with terrorist attacks since the 1970s. In Western Europe, North America and Oceania, deaths rose 250 percent.
The report also named countries with the highest number of terrorist victims. In the first place in the world is Afghanistan. Also on the leaderboard are the United Kingdom, Ukraine and the United States.
GTI suggests that the negative trend may be related to “political instability.” It is believed to be caused by the economic downturn and the COVID-19 pandemic. Experts also believe that reducing international aid for anti-terrorist operations may be counterproductive, and therefore advises Western countries not to abandon this.
Earlier, an increase in extremist and drug crimes was noted in Russia. Statistics indicate an increase in the number of crimes related to terrorism (1,990 crimes, an increase of 33.3 percent) and extremism (708 crimes, an increase of 39.9 percent).
