Cosmonaut: from orbit warned about the beginning of the movement of the glacier that covered the Bodrov group
Actor and director Sergei Bodrov Jr. and his film crew died in September 2002 in the mountains of North Ossetia due to the long transmission of information about the beginning of the movement of the glacier. Cosmonaut Alexander Samokutyaev told about this, writes “Moskovsky Komsomolets”.
As a result of the collapse of the Kolka glacier in the Karmadon Gorge, 125 people died and went missing, including members of Bodrov Jr.'s group, who were in the mountains during the filming of the film. According to Samokutyaev, a month before the natural disaster, cosmonaut Valery Korzun, who was in orbit, noticed changes in the shape and position of the glacier and reported this to Earth.
“Flying several times over the same glacier, on the next loop, he suddenly drew attention to the changes. “It seems to me that the glacier in Karmadon has a different shape,” Korzun said to Earth. I took a photo of this glacier just in case. Nobody thought then how important this change might be, ”Samokutyaev said.
At that time, there was an order in which all photo and video materials were sent from the ISS to Houston, where the information was accumulated and processed, and only then transferred to Russia, Samokutyaev explained. As a result, Korzun's information reached the relevant authorities in Russia, when the glacier had already melted and people died.
“The experts gave a clear answer that if they had learned about the glacier shift earlier, the misfortune could have been avoided,” the cosmonaut emphasized. According to him, in this case, all who were in the gorge would have been evacuated in advance.
Later, experts called a natural process, the signs of which Korzun noticed, the effect of a champagne cork – when volcanic gases are just beginning to move the glacier, and nothing holds it back. Samokutyaev also noted that automatic vehicles were not able to fix such changes from orbit, only a person could do this.
Earlier it was reported that students in St. Petersburg are collecting funds for the restoration of the cemetery pavilion from the film “Brother”, in which the hero of Sergei Bodrov communicated with the Germans in the film by Alexei Balabanov.
