Scientists of the Laboratory of X-ray Astronomy of the Sun of the Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences recorded the largest magnetic storm on Earth since 2019 on the evening of May 12. The level of geomagnetic disturbances at the peak reached seven out of nine.
“In fact, the Earth experienced one very short and strong cosmic impact. The nature of the event now, after a day and a half, is not yet clear enough. There have been no noticeable events on the Sun,” the press service of the institute said.
Scientists said that storms of this magnitude can significantly affect energy systems, easily demolish spacecraft from orbit, and also cause problems in satellite navigation and radio communications.
At the moment, experts have assured that the situation has improved. According to scientists, the Sun has nothing to do with this storm, the flare activity of the star is at a low level.
