Coronavirus outbreak at research station in Antarctica

Polar explorers are sick in a mild form of coronavirus.

An outbreak of COVID-19 occurred at a Belgian research station in Antarctica. Experts believe that this could have provoked the dangerous Omicron strain.

This was reported by BBC News.

16 out of 25 people have been infected with coronavirus at the Princess Elizabeth Antarctic station. The head of the International Polar Foundation, Joseph Cheek, assured that the polar explorers are sick in a mild form. He added that the patients were offered to leave Antarctica, but they refused.

As noted, the first positive test for coronavirus in polar explorers was recorded a week after their arrival at the research station, on December 14. All station workers were vaccinated, and one of them even received a booster dose.

Belgium believes that the outbreak of the coronavirus could have been provoked by the Omicron strain.
