A “Nigerian strain” of coronavirus resistant to vaccines has been discovered in Italy. This was announced by the president of the Italian Society of Virologists and director of the microbiological laboratory Arnaldo Caruso, reports TASS.
“For the first time in Italy, we have isolated a strain marked by mutations against which current vaccines may not be effective,” he said.
A new strain of coronavirus was discovered in Nigeria in December last year. The director of the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) John Nkengasong said the virus mutation is different from the one found in the UK. At the same time, he noted that the new type of coronavirus is partly similar to that identified in South Africa. He stressed that, according to preliminary results, this mutation is less contagious than the South African one.
In the world, 114.7 million people have been infected with coronavirus, 64.7 million have recovered, 2.5 million people have died.
