Foreign scientists have put forward a hypothesis that coronavirus can cause an operative illness – a brain tumor – or accelerate the development of an existing one. Izvestia writes about this.
The assumption came from Turkish scientists from Bezmalem Waqif University in connection with the possibility of coronavirus interacting with brain cells.
So, on the surface of SARS-Cov-2 there is a protein that looks like a thorn. These spines form what is called a crown, which allows the virus to cling to the cell's receptor. There is an enzyme on its surface called ACE2. It is found in most tissues of the human body, including the neurons of the brain, as well as in the auxiliary cells of a special tissue, which make up about 40 percent of the volume of the central nervous system.
However, Russian experts were skeptical about this theory. However, they noted that it requires further study, since the viruses themselves can indeed lead to the appearance of tumors.
In June, scientists at the University of California, San Francisco found that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus uses the same spreading strategy throughout the body as cancer cells. Viruses also alter the function of cells to redirect their metabolism to synthesize viral proteins and nucleic acids and create new viral particles.
