Those who have had COVID-19 have faced neurological problems and mental impairment. This was found out by British and American neurophysiologists from Imperial College London, Medical News reports. The results of scientific work are published on the medRxiv portal.
More than 84 thousand Britons who have suffered from coronavirus in various forms were tested by specialists for memory acuity and cognitive skills using the Great British Intelligence Test. We took into account age, gender, educational level, field of activity, chronic diseases. The data obtained showed that the infection negatively affected the ability of people to understand the text and the meaning of words, to solve problems. However, there was no significant deterioration in the ability to memorize numbers, spatial memory and perception of emotions. Patients with severe COVID-19, after recovery, showed more severe mental impairment than the rest of those infected.
“Our analysis supports the hypothesis that the coronavirus may affect cognitive functions that persist after recovery,” – quoted the publication of the words of the head of the study, Adam Hampshire.
Earlier, Japanese scientists have identified unexpected consequences of the transferred COVID-19, including: hair loss, shortness of breath, weakness, cough, impaired sense of smell and taste. Similar symptoms have been reported in those with Ebola and dengue fever.
