Anna Speranskaya, head of the genomics and post-genomic technologies group at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare, reported that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has not yet been detected in bats in Russia. According to her, experts have tested samples of about two hundred bats of different species. For this, the RT-PCR method was used. They specifically looked for viruses similar to SARS-CoV-2. However, nothing of the kind has ever been found, Speranskaya said.
She said that in addition to SARS-CoV-2, there are other types of coronavirus in nature. It was they who were found in bats on the territory of Russia. Speranskaya noted that such viruses in Russia have not been sufficiently studied, but they are found in bats in all regions of the country where they are usually found.
Earlier, French and Asian researchers found coronaviruses in bats living in Laos that are almost identical to the original version of SARS-CoV-2 from Wuhan. Scientists believe that in the future, these viruses may pose a danger to humanity. According to them, this information “confirms the version of the natural origin of COVID-19.”
