Corona crisis: Carinthian ski areas want to open in December

“We see ourselves well prepared and hope that we will get the 'green light' again at the beginning of December,” says Manuel Kapeller-Hopfgartner, chairman of the cable cars specialist group.

Many Carinthian cable cars have already started snowmaking despite lockdowns. Now the industry is hoping for a start to the season in December, it said in a broadcast by the Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday. One expects fewer or hardly any guests from abroad and hopes for local visitors. The railways would have to economically decide how many lifts are to be switched on. The industry has developed corona prevention concepts.

“We see ourselves well prepared and hope that we will get the 'green light' again at the beginning of December,” said Manuel Kapeller-Hopfgartner, chairman of the cable cars specialist group in the Carinthian Chamber of Commerce, in the broadcast. The cable cars want to reopen at the same time as the trade.

The prevention concepts provide for disinfection of the gondolas by means of cold fogging, and a journey rarely takes more than ten minutes. If necessary, you can also increase the speed to avoid crowds in the queuing area.

The Carinthian ski area operators also see an advantage in the fact that 85 percent of the lifts are open chair lifts or tow lifts. “What has not always proven to be an advantage in recent years – especially in competition with larger ski areas in other (federal) states – now offers the ideal conditions to offer guests a safe mountain experience,” it said.
