Messi and Co. play in empty stadiums at the Copa America
Colombia wants to stick to the Copa America despite the corona pandemic. “The Copa America is safer than ever,” said Colombian sports minister Ernesto Lucena Barrero in a statement on Tuesday (local time). However, contrary to the intention of the South American football association CONMEBOL to fill the stadiums to 30 percent with spectators, the event will not be held in front of fans.
Argentine President Alberto Fernandez had questioned the Copa last week in connection with the announcement of a new lockdown and school closings. It is to take place this summer – parallel to the European Championships – from June 13th to July 10th in Argentina and Colombia. The South America tournament also had to be postponed by a year due to the corona pandemic.
