The electronics specialist from Taiwan is previously known as a manufacturer of Apple devices.
The contract manufacturer Foxconn, known primarily as a manufacturer of various Apple devices, is advancing into the car business. The electronics specialist from Taiwan wants to support the Chinese electric car company Byton in setting up the production of the first series vehicle, as the company announced on Monday.
Byton wanted to start production in China last year, but the plans were put on hold during the corona pandemic. Production is now being targeted by the first quarter of 2022, it said.
Byton was founded by former BMW managers and cooperates with the Chinese auto company FAW, among others. The company's first model, the M-Byte SUV, caused a sensation with, among other things, a huge display practically from door to door in the cockpit. A model ready for series production was presented at the IAA Motor Show in Frankfurt in 2019 and, according to the announcements at the time, should also be launched in Europe in 2021.
Foxconn wants to bring “industrial resources and its expertise in advanced manufacturing technology”, announced the company. Foxconn had already announced a cooperation with the car company Fiat Chrysler for the Chinese market a year ago. But the status of this project is unclear.
