Conqueror of the North: construction of the Lenin icebreaker began 65 years ago
Conqueror of the North. Sixty-five years ago, construction of the Lenin nuclear icebreaker began in Leningrad. It was the world's first nuclear powered surface ship, according to MIR 24 correspondent Vladimir Shkolnikov.
A caravan of ships cuts through the icy desert. The first nuclear icebreaker is ahead. It was built in record time at the Admiralty Plant in Leningrad. Only three years and two months. Already in 1960, he first embarked on an Arctic voyage.
The icebreaker “Lenin” for 100 days of navigation in the ice carried many ships with national economic cargo for the remote northern regions
Before its appearance, navigation along the Northern Sea Route lasted one and a half to two months. “Lenin” extended the sailing season to eight and gave impetus to the development of the entire nuclear fleet. 10 more similar ones appeared. Russia is still the only country that possesses such technology.
“The arrow of human development is gradually turning to the north. No wonder the north, the Arctic is called the last natural treasure of the planet. And here we are, with the help of nuclear icebreakers, a kind of keys to the doors of the Arctic, ”noted the historian of the nuclear icebreaker fleet Vladimir Blinov.
For 30 years of work in the Arctic “Lenin” covered 650 thousand nautical miles – it's like flying the moon three times. The grandfather of the icebreaker fleet retired in 1989. Today, excursions are conducted along its corridors. It is permanently anchored in the port of Murmansk. But from the outside it seems that right now he is ready to leave the non-freezing Kola Bay and go to conquer the Arctic ice.
