'Colonial-era shackles': Greenland prepares to demand independence from Denmark

The government and parliament of Greenland have prepared a draft constitution that will serve as the legislative basis for declaring independence.

The prime minister of Greenland, which is an autonomous territory within Denmark, said that the government and parliament of the island are preparing a legislative basis for declaring independence.

Mute Egede said this in his New Year's address, published on the government website on Thursday, January 2.

“It is time for our country to take the next step. Like other countries in the world, we must work to remove the obstacles to cooperation that can be called the shackles of the colonial era and move on. History has shown that our cooperation with the Kingdom of Denmark has not led to the creation of complete equality. And if we continue to adhere to the Danish constitution, there will be no equality,” Egede said.

The Prime Minister of Greenland emphasized that the inhabitants of the island must shape their own future and decide with whom to cooperate and trade.

“Our cooperation with other countries and our trade relations cannot continue only through Denmark,” the politician emphasized.

He added that the Greenlandic parliament and government have been drafting a constitution for several years now, which will serve as the basis for Greenland's separation from Denmark.

“The opportunity for the people of Greenland to gain independence was enshrined in the provisions of the Home Rule Act, which created the legal basis for achieving independence. A draft of the basic law, the constitution of our country, has also been prepared. Work has already begun on creating the foundations of Greenland as an independent state within the framework of the opportunities and provisions provided for in the Home Rule Act,” Egede added.

Greenland is the largest island in the world and one of the most sparsely populated territories. Its area is 2.1 million square kilometers. km (almost 3.5 times larger than the territory of Ukraine), and the population is about 56 thousand people.

Denmark captured the island and made it its colony in the 18th century, and after a referendum in 1979, Greenland became a self-governing autonomy within the kingdom. Three decades later, in 2009, after another referendum, the Danish parliament adopted the Greenland Home Rule Act, expanding its autonomy and providing conditions for declaring the island's independence. In accordance with this law, Greenland can gain sovereignty if its residents vote for it in a referendum.

Recall that Trump once again stated that the United States will lay claim to Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal. He promised that during his presidency he would advance the issue of annexing territories important to national security to the United States.
