Colombian strain of coronavirus Mu has been added to WHO's list of interest

The World Health Organization (WHO) has added the B.1.621 coronavirus strain detected in January in Colombia to the list of “options of interest” (VOI). He was named Mu. From the register on the organization's website, it follows that the strain has been tracked since August 30.

VOI strains are variants of the coronavirus that either has “genetic changes that are predicted or known to affect the characteristics of the virus such as infectivity, disease severity, ability to avoid exposure to immunity, and avoid diagnosis and therapy,” or may cause to significant transmission of infection in various clusters with an increase in the number of cases.

In Russia, the delta strain is widespread, with which the Ministry of Health associates an increase in mortality in the country. This strain quickly causes complications. Note that last week in the Russian Federation, the daily maximum death rate from coronavirus was recorded – 820 people.
