Climatologist: Death rate from heat waves may increase in Russia
Russia will become one of the first countries in the world, which will have to face heat waves due to global warming, said climatologist Alexander Chernokulsky, reports the Parliamentary Gazette.
According to the expert, warm nights will be one of the main negative consequences of weather anomalies.
“Most often it is plus 20 degrees and above, when the human body simply does not have time to rest,” the scientist specified.
According to Chernokulsky, this phenomenon will be especially difficult for residents of large cities. The climatologist believes that it is necessary to carry out a number of activities that will help people and the economy adapt to changing climate conditions.
“If no one does anything, the death rate from heat waves will, of course, increase,” the expert said.
Previously, scientists found out that global warming is already leading to human casualties. They conducted computer simulations and compared the two worlds: in the first, people did not burn fossil fuels and did not cause the greenhouse effect, and the second corresponded to the real situation on Earth. The data obtained were compared with data on human health and mortality in 732 regions from 43 countries. It turned out that the rise in temperature caused by human activity increased the number of deaths in the summer months by a third.
