Clashes between Muslims and Hindus: a conflict broke out in India over the ban on hijabs in schools

The Karnataka regional government's ban on the wearing of hijabs has led to mass protests and violence.

The Indian state of Karnataka temporarily closed its educational institutions due to the scandal over the wearing of hijabs.

It is reported by The Guardian.

The regional government's hijab ban has led to mass protests and violence.

The problem began in January when six Muslim students staged a week-long protest after being told to take off their walks or stop attending classes.

Last week, other colleges in the state began enforcing the bans after some Hindu students, backed by right-wing Hindu groups, opposed the wearing of hijabs. Hindus, in turn, say: if it is possible to wear hijabs, then they should be allowed to wear traditional saffron shawls.

Muslim students claimed that their right to freedom of religion was being violated. According to them, some colleges are introducing “religious apartheid” – girls in hijabs are kept in separate classes. The protests escalated into violent clashes between Muslims and Hindus, forcing the police to disperse the crowd and fire into the air.

After clashes between Muslims and Hindus, school authorities banned any religious symbols and clothing that “violates equality, integrity and public order.”

The case is currently pending in an Indian court. The authorities also call on students and other citizens to “preserve peace and harmony.” Karnataka's Minister of Education, in a BBC commentary, said the students were being incited to protest by “scoundrels” and that politics was to blame for the clashes.

Recall that in India, Muslim women were “sold” at an auction: among the “lots” there is a Nobel laureate and a famous actress.
