The transition of coordination of Western weapons supplies from the United States to NATO will ensure continued support for Ukraine under any White House administration.
Adviser to the President US National Security Commissioner Jake Sullivan said he could not predict whether Washington would allow US strikes deep into Russian territory.
He said this during the annual security forum in Aspen, Colorado.
“This question was asked to the president at a press conference after the NATO summit, and he essentially said that we are constantly looking at the situation: what Ukraine needs, what we can offer, and make our judgments accordingly. And with the change of war in Ukraine, our support changes, the opportunities that we provide develop, the parameters that we set for them change. Therefore, I cannot give an unambiguous answer to this question about the future,” said the presidential adviser.
Sullivan said the president recognizes that “circumstances are changing.” He recalled that Biden had already changed his policy regarding the use of American weapons, in particular, allowing Ukraine to launch strikes on the border territory of the Russian Federation.
“Russia was actually launching a new offensive right across the border in the direction of Kharkov, and common sense dictated that Ukraine should be able to respond to this offensive. And so the president said: “Yes, of course, go ahead!” But for now it the position regarding strikes deep into Russian territory has not changed,” the adviser noted.
At the same time, Sullivan noted that the United States and American weapons play a “critical role in this war.” Therefore, against the backdrop of the expected change of the White House administration after the elections and the impossibility now of predicting what its policies will be, a transition in the coordination of arms supplies to Ukraine from the United States to NATO is quite appropriate. This step will ensure continued support for the Ukrainian Armed Forces regardless of the political situation in the United States.
Recall that the Pentagon announced the possibility of using American weapons on the territory of the Crimean Peninsula. General Patrick Ryder noted that “Crimea is Ukraine.”
