Researchers have found that highly processed foods negatively affect memory in aging brains.
As part of the scientific work, experts fed aging rats with highly processed food for four weeks. It is noted that the diet mimicked processed foods that people often eat. In particular, we are talking about chips, snacks, frozen food, including pizza and deli meats with preservatives. Subsequently, experts recorded certain changes in the brain of aging rodents – severe inflammation and memory loss. In addition, such a diet is fraught with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Moreover, this diet had such a harmful effect only on elderly rats, while young and adult animals remained unharmed.
At the same time, scientists have also found that it is possible to prevent memory problems as well as reduce inflammation by eating foods rich in the omega-3 fatty acids DHA.
“ These results indicate that consumption of a processed diet can lead to significant and dramatic memory deficits, and in an aging population, rapid memory loss is more likely to develop into neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. With this awareness, perhaps we can limit processed foods in our diets and increase our intake of foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids DHA to either prevent or slow this progression, ”the study authors shared.
