A court in Jiangsu province in China sided with the authors of a textbook in which homosexuality is recognized as a disease – a mental disorder. This is reported by Reuters.
For several years, gay rights activists have reported that they have tried to challenge in court the language used in a university textbook on mental disabilities. In September last year, the court issued a verdict, according to which the claim was recognized as nothing more than the result of a “difference in perception.”
At the same time, the interlocutors of the agency note, as such, the court session did not take place: the judges simply announced the decision. Activists believe that this event will negatively affect the situation of minorities in the Chinese state.
Homosexuality in the PRC has not been considered a criminal offense since 1997, and in 2001 it was also excluded from the list of mental disorders. However, Chinese society generally has a negative attitude towards open homosexuals. As a result, most gays tend to hide their attachments from their families and enter into traditional marriage.
