Josep Borrell's warning came two days after US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed “deep concern” that China is considering providing potentially “lethal aid” to Russia for the war against Ukraine.
The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that if China sends weapons to Russia, it will mean crossing the “red line” for the European Union.
About The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy said this on Monday, February 20.
Recalling the meeting he had the day before with high-ranking Chinese diplomat Wang Yi, Borrell also “expressed serious concern” over China's arms supplies to Russia.< /p>
“I asked the representative of the PRC not to do this, and expressed not only our concern, but also that for us this would be a red line in our relations. He told me that they were not going to do this. But we we will be careful,” Borrell said.
Other EU foreign ministers who attended the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels also warned Beijing about “crossing the border.”
“If such a decision will be made (by China – ed.), it will certainly have consequences,” said Tobias Bielström, Foreign Minister of the Swedish EU Presidency.
“We stand side by side with the United States in this message,” he added.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis also said that the EU would “be on the same page” with the US if Chinese weapons ended up in Russia's hands.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also urged China to remain “pragmatic”.
