The United States should stop trying to influence the holding of the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. The corresponding statement is published on the official website of the department.
“The matter of paramount importance is that the American side should stop trying to interfere in the holding of the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in an official statement.
Wang Yi also called on the United States to stop “playing with fire” on the Taiwan issue and abandon attempts to form anti-Chinese deterrence forces in the Asian region.
On January 19, the Olympic Committees of the United States and Germany recommended that participants of the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing not take personal smartphones, laptops and other gadgets to China because of fears of surveillance of athletes.
On January 18, the director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Sergei Naryshkin, announced attempts by the US State Department to discredit the Beijing Olympics. He said that the SVR has data on a large-scale information campaign launched by Washington and its allies to interfere in the preparation of the Olympic Games.
A number of countries have announced a diplomatic boycott of the Games in Beijing. The reason was concern about the human rights situation in China. The Olympics will not be attended by the leadership of the USA, Australia, Great Britain, Canada, Japan, Denmark and the Netherlands.
The Olympic Games in Beijing will be held from February 4 to 20. Russia will compete at the Games in a neutral status due to the sanctions of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
