The Chinese spacecraft Tianwen 1 landed on the surface of Mars. The delivered rover will have to search for biomolecules on the surface of the Red Planet.
Chinese rover
The Chinese Tianwen-1 spacecraft with the Zhuzhong rover landed on the surface of Mars. This was announced on Saturday, May 15, by the Xinhua news agency.
According to him, this is the first successful delivery of a Chinese probe to another planet.
The descent capsule with the rover separated from the spacecraft at about 04.00 local time (23.00 Moscow time on May 14).
Almost seven-month flight “Tianwen-1”
In February, the robotic interplanetary station Tianwen 1, after nearly seven months of flight, reached Mars orbit and spent nearly two months exploring potential landing sites. Descent in the atmosphere of Mars lasted about 9 minutes.
China's first spacecraft for Mars exploration, Tianwen 1, consisting of an orbital module, a landing capsule and a rover, was launched on July 23, 2020 using the Changzheng 5 launch vehicle from the Wenchang cosmodrome in Hainan province.
The rover explores the soil of the Red Planet
The rover will investigate the geological structure of Mars, as well as conduct a chemical analysis of the composition of the soil and search for biomolecules and biosignatures. The device is equipped with navigation and topographic cameras, an instrument for meteorological changes and two detectors. The presence of a radar station is one of the main differences between the Chinese expedition: such a device was delivered to the Red Planet for the first time.
