Китай ответил на новые ядерные угрозы России

Beijing stressed that nuclear weapons cannot be used to conduct military operations.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry, in response to nuclear threats from Russia, reminded its authorities that a nuclear war cannot be won. Beijing called on “all parties” to exercise restraint to reduce strategic risks.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said this at a briefing, Ukrinform reports.

Mao Ning commented on Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov's statement on September 1 about plans to amend Russia's nuclear doctrine to expand the list of cases where nuclear weapons can be used.

“We have seen this message (Ryabkov's statement – ed.). China has repeatedly emphasized that nuclear weapons cannot be used to resolve a nuclear war, nuclear weapons cannot be used to conduct military operations,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said. MFA.

She recalled that in January 2022, the leaders of the five nuclear states (the United States, China, Great Britain, France and Russia) issued a joint statement in which they noted the impossibility of winning a nuclear war and that it should not be allowed to start.

“Under the current circumstances, it is important for all parties to remain calm, exercise restraint and work together to calm the situation through dialogue and consultations, promote de-escalation and reduce strategic risks,” the Chinese diplomat added.

By the way, Ryabkov's statement was analyzed by ISW. They noted that the official did not specify what the proposed changes to the doctrine might be, “and ISW continues to assess that Russia is unlikely to use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine or engage in a nuclear standoff elsewhere.”
