The publication's sources claim that Beijing is ignoring meetings with Ukrainian officials at the request of Russia.
China is deliberately refusing diplomatic contacts with representatives of the Ukrainian government to please the Kremlin. During the World Economic Forum in Davos, Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang also avoided meeting with President Zelensky.
This is reported by Politico with reference to two unnamed US officials.
One of the publication’s interlocutors said that Beijing rejected Kyiv’s request for a meeting during their mutual visits to Switzerland.
Another senior US official said China refused to meet with Ukrainian officials after Russia urged it to end diplomatic meetings with Ukraine.
B At the same time, an unnamed Ukrainian official denied this characterization, saying that the delegation was not scheduled to meet with Chinese officials and that Kiev never asked for one. Chinese officials did not respond to a request for comment.
A senior European Union official said the EU urged China to resume direct contact with Zelensky, noting that a meeting with Li in Switzerland would be a positive step.
“This is the latest sign that China has no intention of seeking an end to Russian President Vladimir Putin's all-out war against Ukraine. Instead, it has sided with Russia, providing its forces with materials for military use that have supported Moscow's war effort despite to Western pressure and sanctions,” the publication says.
Recall that in 2023, trade turnover between China and Russia reached a new record, economic ties between Beijing and Moscow are strengthening.
