Pelosi will be the highest-ranking official of the United States who has visited Taiwan since American politician Newt Gingrich went there over 25 years ago.
President Xi Jinping warned his U.S. counterpart, Joe Biden, in a phone call Thursday against “outside interference” in Beijing's relationship with the island.
China says Taiwan has no right to conduct foreign relations.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a briefing that China is ready to end dialogue at the highest level with the United States if the speaker of the House of Representatives of Congress visits Taiwan.
The Chinese authorities assure that if the American representative visits Taiwan, the island may be the military answer.
Taiwan and China were divided during the civil war in 1949.
