Cement will be the first to “float”: the Russian Federation realized that it is now possible to deliver sanctioned goods to Kaliningrad only by sea

Government of the Kaliningrad Region completely reorients the delivery of cement to the region from the railway to the sea route.

Note that this is because Lithuania, in pursuance of the EU decision on sanctions against Russia, has banned rail and road transit of sanctioned goods through its territory. Cement is included in the corresponding list.

The governor's press service announced the decision of the government of the Kaliningrad region.

The operational headquarters of the regional government reported on measures to ensure the normal operation of the construction industry. In particular, the main issue concerned the delivery of cement, which had previously arrived, in particular, by rail.

“Now, with the support of the Ministry of Transport of Russia, the logistics of providing the region with the necessary cargo is changing. In particular, we are completely transferring cement to maritime traffic. We worked out with the Eurocement company the volumes of material necessary for the construction industry, which will be packed in big bags and transported by fleet. under the constant control of the governor,” said Alexander Rolbinov, deputy head of the regional government.

For the first such batch of cement, the Kholmogory universal bulk carrier on the Bronka-Kaliningrad line will be used. In addition, the capacity of the Ursa Major ro-ro cargo vessel on the Ust-Luga-Baltiysk line will be used.

Also, The Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation confirmed the readiness of the redeployment of ships to provide the region with all the necessary resources. In the next two weeks, the carrying capacity of the St. Petersburg-Kaliningrad maritime traffic will be strengthened by additional vessels.

Recall, in pursuance of the EU decision of June 18, Lithuania banned the transit transportation of sanctioned goods and technologies through its territory. Thus, this made it more difficult for Russia to transport the relevant goods to and from the Kaliningrad region, which is located between Lithuania and Poland.

The Russian side reacted to this with threats and the state began on June 20 unscheduled exercises of missile and artillery units in Kaliningradskaya region.

Subsequently, Lithuania, again in pursuance of the EU decision, banned the transit of sanctioned road cargo from the Russian Federation through its territory. Therefore, Russia can deliver such goods to Kaliningrad only by sea.
