The Central Election Commission of Israel supported the demand of the Jewish Power party and removed from the parliamentary elections the candidacy of a citizen of the country, an Arab by nationality, Ibtisam Maraanu, who published materials on social networks containing clear disrespect for the ethical norms of Israeli society.
In particular, Maraana said that she did not get up at the sound of a siren on the Day of Remembrance of those who fell in wars and victims of terrorist attacks. In addition, the politician openly spoke out in support of one of the activists of the Islamic extremist movement, who is currently under administrative arrest.
Later, Maraana said that she regretted her publications on social networks, but this did not correct her position – the CEC upheld the decision, and now it must be approved by the expanded panel of the High Court of Justice of Israel.
Against the background of the decision of the CEC, a split occurred in the Israeli Party of Labor, of which Maraana is a member: some Arab party members welcomed the withdrawal of her candidacy, while others considered the actions of the Central Election Commission overly politicized.
