North Korean hackers carried out a global cyber attack in an attempt to steal military secrets for support for its own nuclear weapons program.
This is reported by Reuters with reference to a joint statement by the intelligence services of the USA, Great Britain and South Korea.
The report states that the secret thieves have targeted the computer systems of various defense or engineering companies, including manufacturers of tanks, submarines, naval ships, fighter aircraft, missile and radar systems.
Among the US victims of the attack were the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and two Air Force bases – Randolph in Texas and Robins in Georgia.
The attackers used common phishing techniques and exploits to trick officials of targeted companies into giving them access to their internal computer systems.
The hackers, dubbed Anadriel or APT45 by cybersecurity researchers, are believed to be part of North Korea's intelligence agency known as the Reconnaissance General Bureau.
Recall that previously unknown hackers broke the database of personal data of British military personnel and employees of the country's Ministry of Defense.
