The abnormal temperature persists, despite climatologists' expectations of a decrease.

The record warm January 2025 has caused concern among climatologists. Citing monitoring, climate scientists have shown a series of unprecedented temperature highs and said that the global average air temperature in January was the highest on record.

The Guardian reports this, citing observations by the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).

“January 2025 was a record-breaking month for warmth,” said Samantha Bygess, strategic manager of climate at the European Centre.

This is the 18th month in the past 19 months when the global average temperature has exceeded pre-industrial levels by more than 1.5°C.

Under the Paris Climate Agreement, signatory countries committed to preventing the global annual temperature increase from rising by 1.5°C. Last year, the figures reached that level but did not exceed it.

Climatologists had expected the temperature anomalies to subside after the regular El Niño phenomenon began to wane. Instead, a cooling phase called La Niña was expected to begin.

Factors that cause abnormally warm weather in winter

Climatologists do not see a cooling effect, or at least a temporary decrease in high global temperatures. At the same time, they expect the influence of the La Niña phenomenon (an oceanic and atmospheric phenomenon that is a colder analogue of El Niño – extreme values ​​of water temperature and atmospheric pressure, lasting about six months – ed.) to be weak, and temperatures in the equatorial parts of the Pacific Ocean indicate a slowdown and suspension of the cooling process.

They also noted that in January 2025, sea ice in the Arctic reached its minimum level. Sea surface temperatures were very high in many basins. According to scientists, January's figures were the second highest on record.

2025 to be third hottest year in a row

Scientists predict that temperatures will remain just as high in 2025. And that, as they say, is “a little confusing.”

Scientists agree that long-term global warming is caused by fossil fuel burning and climate variability.

Global Warming: What Causes It

One hypothesis scientists have about the global warming process is that the transition to cleaner fossil fuels has accelerated warming by reducing sulfur emissions, which makes clouds more reflective of sunlight.

In addition to weather station data, which goes back to 1940, scientists use other climate data. We are talking about ice cores (samples in the form of cylindrical columns), tree rings and coral skeletons, which prove that the current period is probably the warmest on the planet in the last 125 thousand years.

Eyewitnesses to the tragedy saw the plane smoking in the sky and heard an explosion before it crashed to the ground.

One U.S. service member and three defense contractors were killed Thursday, Feb. 6, when a light aircraft hired by the U.S. military crashed in the south Philippines.

“The aircraft was conducting a routine mission to provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support at the request of our Philippine allies,” the command said in a statement.

The law provides for tougher conditions for Russian applicants for Czech citizenship.

Czech President Peter Pavel signed a law expanding the protection of Ukrainian refugees from the war unleashed by Russia. The same law also provides for a ban on granting Czech citizenship to Russian citizens and criminal liability for unauthorized activity in favor of a foreign state.

In the Czech Republic, temporary protection for refugees from Putin's war in Ukraine is valid until the end of March this year, but last year the EU agreed to extend it for another year. The changes to the law also provide that economically self-sufficient refugees will be able to obtain a special permit for long-term residence in the Czech Republic. Long-term residents must apply for permanent residence after five years, just like other long-term residents.

The amendment to the law also includes a new criminal offence for unauthorised activity in favour of a foreign state, which will be punishable by up to five years in prison.

The penalty will apply to people who “work for a foreign country or organisation with the intent to threaten or harm the constitutional order, sovereignty, territorial integrity, defence or security of the Czech Republic.”

The law also provides for tougher conditions for Russian applicants for Czech citizenship. Applicants from Russia will be able to obtain Czech citizenship only if they renounce their Russian citizenship and provide evidence of this.

Even if they renounce their Russian passport, applications from Russian applicants will be frozen, with the exception of political refugees and children under 15.

Wherever the captured North Koreans are sent, Ukraine plans to consult with Seoul on the terms of their transfer.

The Ukrainian government is ready for talks with South Korea regarding the possible transfer to it of two North Korean soldiers who are in Ukrainian custody captivity.

This was stated by the Ukrainian Ambassador to South Korea Dmitry Ponomarenko in an interview with The Korean Times.

The diplomat emphasized that Kiev and Seoul are not yet holding official negotiations on this issue, but Ukraine is ready to cooperate if the DPRK soldiers refuse to return to their homeland.

“Considering the threat to the life and freedom of North Korean servicemen in the event of their repatriation to the DPRK, as well as in the event of their refusal to return, we are open to dialogue with international partners, in particular with the Republic of Korea, regarding the possibility of their transfer to third countries. In any case, I expect that we will consult with South Korea regarding the terms of their transfer,” Ponomarenko said.

However, if the soldiers want to return to North Korea, Ukraine will be obliged to repatriate them to their homeland in accordance with the Geneva Conventions, the ambassador noted.

Earlier, Zelensky publicly proposed exchanging captured North Korean soldiers for Ukrainian fighters captured by Russia. But given that neither Pyongyang nor Moscow has officially recognized the participation of DPRK troops in the war against Ukraine, organizing such an exchange could be a difficult task.

“The issue of exchanging prisoners is very delicate… In order to avoid a negative impact on the process, it would be advisable to refrain from premature comments on this matter for now,” – Ponomarenko said.

The diplomat did not answer whether negotiations between Kiev and Pyongyang on the issue of exchanging prisoners took place.
