Cardiac development: a unique diagnostic system created in Kemerovo
Heart defect is not a sentence. Russian scientists have found a way to prevent the risk of developing this pathology in infants. Moreover, this can be done even before the conception of the child. The details were reported by the correspondent of “MIR 24” Andrey Eganov.
Kuzbass scientists can now look into the future. This is the merit of a student of the Kemerovo Medical University. Sofia Grivtsova has developed a unique system for detecting heart defects in infants. With its help, specialists will understand how great the risk of such a pathology is even before the conception of a child.
“Intended parents came to the clinic at the stage of pregnancy planning and underwent an immunological test to identify the risk of congenital heart disease. If the risk for this couple is high, then they would receive immunological treatment, ”said Grivtsova.

All that is required from future parents is to donate blood. The computer program will process the indicators and instantly calculate the risk coefficient – from 0 to 100%. To study the test system, the scientists put together a focus group of several dozen pairs. Christina and her husband also decided to check up.
“I learned about the study from colleagues, consulted with my husband and decided to participate. They were examined, blood was taken from us. According to the results, our risk is minimal. Now we are at the stage of pregnancy planning, ”said Kristina Kabanova, a focus group participant.
The algorithm will also evaluate more than 60 immune disorders leading to heart disease and suggest about 30 treatment options. This approach will save thousands of lives.
“Congenital heart defects of all other defects are in second place in frequency. The first is the defects of the nervous system. And they are formed when the woman does not yet know that she is pregnant – on the 10-40th day of gestation, ”said obstetrician-gynecologist Larisa Mekhovskaya.
Sophia presented her development at the All-Russian competition “Clever”. She was recognized as the best and was awarded a grant for further research. If all goes well, the test system will be able to use antenatal clinics, perinatal centers and other medical organizations.
“In order to further promote these products in practical healthcare, it is necessary to obtain registration of a medical device. This is what we are doing now, having created a small innovative enterprise for cardio-innovation in the final of “Clever Man”, – noted Andrey Shebaldin, the project's scientific leader, leading researcher at the laboratory of heart defects.
The developers assure that they have no competitors. All existing analogues are able to assess the risk only during pregnancy, and not before. This means that the Kemerovo system is one step ahead.
