Candy for restoration of tooth enamel was invented in the USA

Specialists from the University of Washington have invented special candies that can restore damaged tooth enamel, writes Futurism magazine.

To create the lozenges, the scientists used a genetically modified protein that can add thin layers of new enamel to the surface of the teeth. Phosphorus and calcium ions were added to the composition of the sweets – substances that are the building material of tooth enamel.

University staff have already tested their development on live rodents, as well as on teeth extracted from humans, pigs and rats. In the course of experiments, scientists have found that one candy a day will help maintain good enamel condition, and two lozenges restore the top layer of the tooth by a few microns. A nice bonus of the candies is that the enamel they recreate will be white.

Currently, preparations are underway for clinical trials.

Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, but food acids, bacteria, and the chewing of solid foods cause it to become thinner and more damaged. These processes can be prevented by adjusting your diet and introducing certain foods to strengthen the dental membrane.
