For the first time in nine years, Canada is again world champion in women's ice hockey. The Canadians won the final in Calgary against arch rivals and defending champions USA in extra time with 3: 2 (0: 2.2: 0.0: 0; 1: 0). The Canadians expanded their record to eleven world titles. At the previous five World Championships, however, they had to give way to the USA. In 2019 years they had missed the final for the first time and had to be content with bronze.
In a new edition of the eternal duel, the Americans got off to a better start. After 13 minutes and the first third they led by double goal scorer Alex Carpenter, the daughter of former NHL player Bobby Carpenter, 2-0. The Canadians equalized in the second period, and because there were no more goals in regular time after that, extra time was necessary. Marie-Philip Poulin made the decision in favor of Canada after a good seven minutes.
Bronze went to Finland, which defeated Switzerland 3: 1 (1: 0.2: 1.0: 0).
