Super profits from the sale of oil allow Russian President Putin to continue the war in Ukraine.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a ban on the import of Russian oil due to the war unleashed by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
He made such a statement during a press conference on Monday, February 28, reports Reuters.
“We are announcing our intention to ban all imports of crude oil from Russia, an industry that has brought great profits to President Putin and his oligarchs,” Trudeau said.
The country imported $228 million worth of Russian energy products in 2021, according to Statistics Canada.
“While Canada has imported very small amounts [of crude oil] in recent years, this measure sends a strong signal,” the Canadian prime minister said.
At present, the ban only applies to the import of crude oil, but in the future, the Canadian government intends to abandon Russian oil products in general.
Recall that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia should be deprived of the opportunity to freely enter seaports and receive super profits from energy trade. “Buying Russian goods now is paying money for killing people,” the head of the Ukrainian state stressed.
