Canadian banks have begun freezing the accounts of participants and sponsors of protests against coronavirus restrictions in Ottawa. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, reports CBC News.

She also noted that the insurance of truckers whose trucks are used in illegal blockades will be canceled and their bank accounts blocked. According to Freeland, these measures are justified by the provisions of the special emergency law and are necessary to “protect democracy” and “restore peace and order.”

On February 15, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was ready to take emergency measures to deal with protests against coronavirus restrictions that have gripped the country since the end of January. The Emergency Law was adopted in 1988, but until that time it had never been applied in practice.
