“Burlaki” in Antarctica: Russian polar explorers sent powerful off-road vehicles to work

In Antarctica, polar explorers will have the unique Burlak off-road vehicles. Powerful machines capable of working in the extreme conditions of the Far North are assembled in Yekaterinburg. MIR 24 correspondent Aleksey Zhidkikh met with their creator.

Burlakov are accustomed to seeing on the Volga, and now they will work in Antarctica. With the light hand of the designer Alexei Makarov. Colleagues nicknamed him “the composer of off-road vehicles.” Makarov began “composing” for the Far North several years ago. Says not for the money.

“We still have, how much we are engaged in, it has not paid off. Rather, it is such a hack: if it works, it will not work, ”said the designer, traveler Alexei Makarov.

In the snowy desert, the task of the six-wheeled four-ton Burlakovs, created according to the BTR-60 concept, is to transport people and cargo from the coastal Progress station to the interior of the mainland, to the Vostok station and back. The distance is one and a half thousand kilometers.

“The car is designed for driving in difficult weather conditions, on those soils where tracked vehicles do not drive, heavy wheeled vehicles do not drive, to overcome hummocks, water obstacles,” said Sergey Beret, a member of the North is Near expedition.

Will they pull “Burlaki” or not, they found out in the Kara Sea. In the spring, when the ice is thin, to check the SUV not only with hummocks and snowdrifts, but also in the ice. “Burlak” is an amphibious vehicle that does not sink in water. Tests have shown: Makarov's all-terrain vehicle is as reliable as a pistol.

The designers did their best for passengers. “Burlak” is a mobile home. There are eight berths in the back. Comfortable and spacious.

“When it’s sweeping well, it’s just nice to stand up in the car, take two steps back and forth. It's better than sitting there all the time in a certain position, ”added Alexey Makarov.

And if there is a breakdown, dig in without leaving the salon. The designers have thought of this too.

The first “Burlak”, upgraded after tests in the Kara Sea, arrived at the Vostok station at the end of January this year. It was a gift to the polar explorers for the 200th anniversary of the discovery of the coldest continent by the Russian expedition. Soon they will have a whole fleet of all-terrain vehicles. The icebreaker will deliver six more Burlakovs from the port of St. Petersburg to Antarctica.
