“Built-in” life destroyer discovered on terrestrial planets

A Harvard researcher stated that terrestrial planets may have a “built-in” life destroyer. This is a complete glaciation of the entire surface, which has a high probability for objects like our Earth.

There is a hypothesis according to which the climate of the planets is itself balanced and does not allow the temperature to rise sharply up or down. Researcher Robin Wordsworth decided to test whether the latest data on the Earth's climate in the past correspond to this hypothesis.

It should be noted that the complete glaciation of the Earth, including the equatorial zone, will occur at an average temperature of +7 degrees Celsius. Once it dropped to + 9-10 degrees on the planet.

Thanks to modeling, the scientist saw that with a serious cold snap, the Earth's oceans begin to actively absorb carbon dioxide, thereby reducing the greenhouse effect and increasing the cooling. The researcher concluded that with a constant level of solar radiation, the planet should completely freeze over 300 million years. The increased radiation from the Sun, surprisingly, did not reduce the rate of glaciation.

The scientist noted that in the past, the Earth did not have enough degrees to start glaciation. And modeling has shown that almost all terrestrial exoplanets should often fall into such an icy state. This means that complex life will not survive on such a planet.
