In Potsdam on Sunday, October 25, four-day negotiations between the Ver.di service workers 'trade union and the Association of Communal Employers' Unions of Germany (VKA) about an increase in salaries of federal and municipal civil servants in Germany ended. From April 2021, their salaries will increase by 1.4 percent (at least 50 euros), and from April 2022 – by another 1.8 percent. In addition, by the end of this year, all state employees will receive the so-called “coronavirus premium” in the amount of 300 to 600 euros.

Special conditions have been agreed for the medical staff. Those who are busy caring for the patient will receive 70 more euros from March 2021, and another 50 euros – from March 2022. The monthly co-payments for the staff of intensive care units will double to 100 euros.

For those civil servants who are paid at the bottom of the pay scale, the overall increase will be 4.5 percent, said Ver.di CEO Frank Werneke. In addition, those taking vocational training at enterprises will receive 25 euros more. The gradual increase in income will affect about 2.3 million people.

The union demanded a 4.8 percent increase in wages in 12 months

The trade union demanded to increase the salaries of public sector employees by 4.8 percent, or at least 150 euros, and the pay of interns and those undergoing vocational training by 100 euros within 12 months. In addition, Ver.di insisted on improving working conditions in the pre-retirement period and minimizing the difference in working hours of civil servants in the “new” and “old” lands. In turn, the VKA proposed a three-stage salary increase of 3.5 percent, stretched until March 2023.

In March 2019, state employees agreed on a salary increase, which was supposed to apply to about 1 million people. The German Civil Servants' Association (DBB) then demanded an increase in wages by 6 percent, or at least 200 euros, and by 100 euros – payments to interns and those who undergo vocational training in government agencies, as well as to increase the surcharge for work on Saturdays to hospital employees up to 20 percent.
