A new strain of coronavirus, which was identified in the UK in December this year, was found in Ireland. This was announced by the country's chief sanitary doctor Tony Holohan, reports RTE.

The infection was detected by virologists in a laboratory at University College Dublin. “Further tests in the coming days and weeks will establish the extent of the spread of this virus in the country,” Holohan said.

Earlier, Ireland introduced a 14-day quarantine for all arrivals from the UK.

On the eve it became known that a new mutation of the coronavirus reached Germany. The British strain of the virus was found in a woman who flew to Frankfurt from London. Later, a new type of coronavirus was also identified in Switzerland.

A dangerous mutation of the coronavirus was first discovered in the UK in September. To date, about a thousand cases of infection with the new strain have been registered. The mutation has also been identified in patients in the Netherlands, Denmark, Australia and Italy. The British Advisory Board on New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats said this variant of the coronavirus is spreading faster.
