According to The Daily Telegraph, the first experiments to extract gold from parts of old gadgets were successful. It was possible to obtain gold with a purity of 999.9. The Royal Mint hopes that the process can be improved, and then it will be possible to extract palladium, copper, silver and other metals from used equipment.
The use of new technologies should have “a real impact on solving one of the world's greatest environmental problems,” Mint Executive Director Anne Jessop told the publication.
