Britain will punish government officials in Belarus who, according to London, grossly violate human rights. This was stated by the head of the British Foreign Office Dominic Raab, reports TASS.

“Considering the fraudulent inauguration of [President of Belarus Alexander] Lukashenko, I ordered the sanctions department of the Foreign Ministry to prepare sanctions in accordance with the Magnitsky amendment,” the minister said. Raab added that the work will be coordinated with the US and Canada.

The Magnitsky Amendment was adopted by the British Parliament in 2018 on sanctions and anti-money laundering legislation and allows for the freezing of assets and the denial of visas for individuals involved in corruption and human rights abuses.

Earlier it was reported that the foreign ministers of the EU countries were unable to agree on a list of personal sanctions for Belarus. This was due to the position of Cyprus, which intends to achieve at the same time the introduction of restrictive measures against Turkey in connection with Ankara's plans to produce natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is known that after the failure of negotiations at the diplomatic level, the issue will be discussed by the leaders of the state

In Belarus, for the second month, mass protests have continued over the official results of the presidential elections on August 9, according to which Lukashenko won 80 percent of the vote.
